Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
June 13, 2025
Psalm 46:1-11
1 God is our refuge and strength, a help always near in times of great trouble. 2 That’s why we won’t be afraid when the world falls apart, when the mountains crumble into the center of the sea, 3 when its waters roar and rage, when the mountains shake because of its surging waves. Selah 4 There is a river whose streams gladden God’s city, the holiest dwelling of the Most High. 5 God is in that city. It will never crumble. God will help it when morning dawns. 6 Nations roar; kingdoms crumble. God utters his voice; the earth melts. 7 The LORD of heavenly forces is with us! The God of Jacob is our place of safety. Selah 8 Come, see the LORD’s deeds, what devastation he has imposed on the earth 9 bringing wars to an end in every corner of the world, breaking the bow and shattering the spear, burning chariots with fire. 10 “That’s enough! Now know that I am God! I am exalted among all nations; I am exalted throughout the world!” 11 The LORD of heavenly forces is with us! The God of Jacob is our place of safety. Selah
Good Morning! The Lord of heavenly forces is with us!
1 God is our refuge and strength, a help always near in times of great trouble. 2 That’s why we won’t be afraid when the world falls apart,
Every day, I hear someone say, or admittedly, I say, “We are living in difficult times!” I believe this is true, but I also believe every generation since the beginning of time has uttered these words at least once during their lifetime.
This Psalm is filled with vivid imagery of devastation and renewal. We, God’s children, create devastation, and God counters with Renewal. Mountains fall into the sea; nations roar; kingdoms crumble.
Out of our chaos and mess, God comes, gets our attention, and speaks, “That’s enough! Now know that I am God,” or in our more recognizable translations, “Be still and know that I am God.” The first time I read Psalm 46:10 in the Common English Bible, I felt cheated of the beautiful words, Be Still and Know,” but after letting The CEB translation sit in my consciousness for a while, I developed an appreciation for the tone and tenor of these words.
Think of a time when, as a parent or adult in charge, the noise and chaos escalated quickly, so that your immediate response was, “That’s enough,” or “I have had enough!” After the shock of your outburst quieted the room, you regathered yourself and said, “Be still and know!”
Yes, we are living in a difficult time. Things are happening so quickly, and our world seems to be crumbling around us. In the midst of it all, we become despondent or angry. Either way, we often forget to listen for God to speak. We ask instead, “How long, O Lord?” and cry, “Save Us.” Can we be saved if we ignore the life ring that is tossed beside us? Can we be blessed if we clasp our hands across our chests and refuse the gifts that are offered to us?
10 “That’s enough! Now know that I am God! I am exalted among all nations; I am exalted throughout the world!” 11 The LORD of heavenly forces is with us! The God of Jacob is our place of safety.
Giving Lord, you bless us abundantly! We can be so blind to what is important. Open our eyes, ears, and hearts so that your blessings do not go unnoticed. Thank you. We love you, Lord! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: With God, we can weather any storm.
