Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room

June 21, 2022

Read Romans 8:22-27

22 We know that the whole creation is groaning together and suffering labor pains up until now. 23 And it’s not only the creation. We ourselves who have the Spirit as the first crop of the harvest also groan inside as we wait to be adopted and for our bodies to be set free. 24 We were saved in hope. If we see what we hope for, that isn’t hope. Who hopes for what they already see? 25 But if we hope for what we don’t see, we wait for it with patience. 26 In the same way, the Spirit comes to help our weakness. We don’t know what we should pray, but the Spirit himself pleads our case with unexpressed groans. 27 The one who searches hearts knows how the Spirit thinks, because he pleads for the saints, consistent with God’s will.

Good morning! This is the day that the Lord has made! Let us rejoice and be glad in it!

Peace, be still! Wow! I hope that I never lose the awe that I experience when I see God’s mysterious ways at work in me and in those around me. It is such a blessing when I open the daily passage of Scripture. Sometimes, before I even start to read, I catch myself just smiling when I open my Bible to the passage. There are so many times that it seems to be just the right Words for that moment because it follows a conversation from another day or from a recent sermon or most often it contains Words I need to hear.

Words! Sometimes we are blessed and cursed with our ability to speak! There are words of love and comfort, but there are also words of cruelty and hate. Have you ever experienced a time when you are at a loss for words? Interestingly, we can become so focused on what we are waiting to say during a conversation that we don’t hear the words the other participants are saying.

God knows our thoughts before we even put them into words. So maybe we might ask, “Why do we need to speak when sharing ourselves with God?” I believe that in forming words to express our thoughts we must take ownership of our feelings: good and bad. It seems that the words are more for our benefit than God’s because God already knows. In moments of intense situations, words can slip out to express thoughts buried so deeply that we didn’t even realize those thoughts were within us.

When do we typically have trouble verbalizing our thoughts? It is during times of extreme emotions. When are we filled with such emotions? We immediately think of moments of great sorrow and agony and intense anger, but also in times of immense joy and happiness. All of these are times when we need and we should be talking to God, but our words simply won’t form into anything intelligible. Remember, our God is an awesome God who understands how our human frailties work. When we choose a life with Christ, the Holy Spirit enters our being to transform us into the ones for whom God planned/plans/will continue to plan.

During those moments when words won’t come, the Holy Spirit intercedes on our behalf with “sighs too deep for words.” Paul describes this language as unexpressed groans. We don’t know what we should pray, but the Spirit himself pleads our case with unexpressed groans. 27 The one who searches hearts knows how the Spirit thinks, because he pleads for the saints, consistent with God’s will.

What an awesome God we serve!

Loving and Gracious God, Thank You for loving us. You are an awesome God. May you always be ready to receive our words, sighs, and groans. Thank You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen

Thought for the day: I don’t always need words to pray.
