Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
June 29, 2025
Job 26:7-14
7 He stretched the North over chaos, hung earth over nothing; 8 wrapped up water in his clouds, yet they didn’t burst out below; 9 hid the face of the full moon, spreading his cloud over it; 10 traced a circle on the water’s surface, at the limit of light and darkness. 11 Heaven’s pillars shook, terrified by his blast. 12 By his power he stilled the Sea; split Rahab with his cleverness. 13 Due to his wind, heaven became clear; his hand split the fleeing serpent. 14 Look, these are only the outer fringe of his ways; we hear only a whispered word about him. Who can understand his thunderous power?
Good Morning! Morning has broken! Praise God!
Imagine a power so great we can only hear whispers. Think about a dog whistle! One short toot and dogs from the entire neighborhood are howling. Yet, we humans don’t hear a thing. We can explain it because the sound frequencies that human ears can hear are more limited than dogs.
Dogs, who are descended from wolves, need keen hearing to help them survive in the wilderness. Or maybe it’s the old riddle, “if a tree falls in a forest, and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?” Bottom line, a sound is created, but we don’t hear it.
In John 12 we read, …28Father, glorify Your name!” Then a voice came from heaven: “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.” 29 The crowd standing there heard it and said that it had thundered. Others said that an angel had spoken to Him. 30In response, Jesus said, “This voice was not for My benefit, but yours.…
In 1 Kings, God gets Elijah’s attention with great winds, shaking earth, fires, and thunder, but when he speaks it is a still clear voice.
We live in a noisy, chaotic world. How many times is God speaking and we are too overwhelmed with sound that we don’t hear it? I believe within the immense power of God’s voice, there is a minuscule range through which we can hear. When God needs our attention, God uses sounds like thunder to awaken us from our noise-infused slumber so that we are prepared to Pay Attention. Bottom line: God is speaking! Pay Attention!
Giving Lord, you bless us abundantly! We want to listen, but we forget to pay attention. Thank you for not giving up on us. Thank you. We love you, Lord! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: Listen for the whispers of God
God is speaking! Don’t forget to listen! Pastor Liz
