Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room

July 12, 2023

Psalm 3:1-8

1 LORD, I have so many enemies! So many are standing against me. 2 So many are talking about me: “Even God won’t help him.” Selah 3 But you, LORD, are my shield! You are my glory! You are the one who restores me. 4 I cry out loud to the LORD, and he answers me from his holy mountain. Selah 5 I lie down, sleep, and wake up because the LORD helps me. 6 I won’t be afraid of thousands of people surrounding me on all sides. 7 Stand up, LORD! Save me, my God! In fact, hit all my enemies on the jaw; shatter the teeth of the wicked! 8 Rescue comes from the LORD! May your blessing be on your people! Selah

Good Morning, Talk to God!

David provides us with many glimpses of his thoughts. His Psalms of praise uplift us, but we are troubled by his Psalms of lament. In this Psalm, David seems to be arguing with himself. He starts with his worries which he follows with a recounting of the grace of God. Then he challenges God to take care of him (if a bit violently) in verse 7. He follows this with a proclamation of God, who rescues his people.

David is fleeing from his son; this is his prayer the morning after hiding in a cave. In these few verses, David shows us how to pray to God. First, share your troubles. Then, ask for help. Finally, turn your problems over to God. David ends with a general petition for all of God’s children.

I have researched Selah, which we see often in the Psalms. There are varying opinions of the Hebrew word. Some see it as a transition word or even a pause. Perhaps it was David’s . . . or a word indicating breathe as at the end of a musical phrase since the Psalms are songs by David.

Through David, we learn that even those anointed and chosen by God are not promised perfect lives. David had many struggles, but he always called upon God to lead him in his times of need. Many of the Psalms include a listing of God’s power, grace, and glory. While David trusted God to deliver him from his enemies, as evidenced in his writings, David was human and struggled with doubts in his times of despair, but each time remained steadfast in his belief.

God is listening and waiting to provide for us. Keep talking and praying to God, for God is our lifeline. When the storms of life are raging, God is standing with us, holding us up when we can no longer stand on our own. God is closer than the very breath we breathe. Talk to God!

Comforting God, We thank you! We should talk to you more often. We know you are there waiting to hear from us, but we forget to share with you. We thank you for waiting patiently! In the name of Christ, we pray. Amen

Thought for the day: Today, I will take a moment to pause and praise God.
