Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
July 23, 2024
Isaiah 55:1-3
1 All of you who are thirsty, come to the water! Whoever has no money, come, buy food and eat! Without money, at no cost, buy wine and milk! 2 Why spend money for what isn’t food, and your earnings for what doesn’t satisfy? Listen carefully to me and eat what is good; enjoy the richest of feasts. 3 Listen and come to me; listen, and you will live. I will make an everlasting covenant with you, my faithful loyalty to David.
John 4:13-15
…13Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again. 14 But whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a fount of water springing up to eternal life.” 15 The woman said to Him, “Sir, give me this water so that I will not get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.”…
Good Morning! God will take care of us!
Think of a time when you had a craving for some food. If it wasn’t readily available, you tried to substitute something else, but you just weren’t satisfied. You kept looking for the just right taste and consumed many things. When you finally found what you were looking for, you had this moment of bliss, “Ahh . . . that’s it.” After trying and tasting many things, one bite of the right food satisfies your craving.
Isaiah prophecies of the water that satisifies: the living water. John shares the story of the Samaritan Woman at the well when Jesus proclaims that he is the living water: the water for which we long. The water is a symbol of all that we need to live. With Christ we are alive, without Christ, we exist among the walking dead.
Beyond our physical needs, what do we crave: peace, love, joy, mercy, forgiveness, . . .? Jesus offers all of these to those who come to him. Unlike the earthly provisions, Jesus offers neverending satisfaction for all of our cravings. Through the Holy Spirit within us, we can find the peace, love, joy, mercy, and forgiveness for which we long.
Loving God, Thank you for creating us. Jesus said, Come unto me and I will give you rest. Too many times, we want to handle things ourselves, but we do not find what we need. In You, we are abundantly satisfied. Thank you for loving us. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: God provides all we need.
Drink the living water and be satisfied! Pastor Liz
