Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
July 26, 2024
Psalm 18:27-31
27 You are the one who saves people who suffer and brings down those with proud eyes. 28 You are the one who lights my lamp the LORD my God illumines my darkness. 29 With you I can charge into battle; with my God I can leap over a wall. 30 God! His way is perfect; the LORD’s word is tried and true. He is a shield for all who take refuge in him. 31 Now really, who is divine except the LORD? And who is a rock but our God?
Good Morning! Jesus lights the way in the darkness!
When we are immersed in darkness, even a tiny speck of light fosters hope. A few years ago, I was blessed to experience two different sea turtle hatchings. Sea turtles come ashore and lay their eggs in the sand in mid to late spring. Diligent groups work to protect these endangered species by marking the nests and monitoring them as the time to hatch approaches.
I encountered this process while at the beach and decided to join the vigil. We sat in the dark for several nights, awaiting the “boil” to begin. The boil is when the babies begin to hatch, and the nest appears to boil from the flourishing activity. We were instructed to sit or stand quietly and watch.
For the babies to survive, they must reach the sea. They hatch at night and instinctively head to the moon's light and into the sea. Like runway lights welcoming home the returning plane, the moon provides a path for the sea turtles to reach safety.
Christ is the light that welcomes us home in the darkness. We are called to follow the light to safety. Our journey to the light can be perilous, or we can become distracted and lose our way for a while, but the light continues to shine. When we are ready, the light will lead us home.
Loving God, Thank you for creating us. Sometimes, we choose to stumble in the darkness, but your light continues to light the way. Thank you for ushering us home. Thank you for loving us. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: Jesus is the light of the world.
Go to the light! Pastor Liz
