Morning Devotional 072923 Finding Peace

Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room

July 29, 2023

Philippians 4:4-7

4 Be glad in the Lord always! Again I say, be glad! 5 Let your gentleness show in your treatment of all people. The Lord is near. 6 Don’t be anxious about anything; rather, bring up all of your requests to God in your prayers and petitions, along with giving thanks. 7 Then the peace of God that exceeds all understanding will keep your hearts and minds safe in Christ Jesus.

Good Morning, Rejoice! Again, I say rejoice!

I had a wonderful trip to Indiana and had some precious visits with family members. Yesterday afternoon, I arrived at the airport for what I would call a crazy 24 hours; that is part of why this devotional is just now being written. My one-hour flight from Indy to Atlanta became a four-hour adventure that caused me to miss my connecting flight home. After a very long line and a conversation with two different Delta employees, I ended up spending the night at the airport waiting for an 8:00 am flight. Needless to say, not much sleeping happened with me or my fellow stranded travelers.

It was interesting to see how we each coped in this unexpected situation. The least anxious ones were able to find a place to sleep despite the noises, bright lights, and inconvenience. A few spent the time on their phones calling the airline executives, and others dosed in and out as the weariness overcame them. I admit that I was part of that group.

Once I kinda wrapped my head around spending the night at the airport, I did take time to talk to God. I shared my frustrations and turned them over to him, and I especially thanked God for a fruitful trip and that despite the extended flight time, I thanked God that me and my fellow strandees were safe. After that, I did feel at peace, and even in the very hard, unforgiving chair, I slept for a bit.

When I saw this was today’s passage, I smiled at God’s mysterious way to give me just what I needed to hear. Rejoice, again I say rejoice! This is part of the Good News! God is waiting to fill us with the peace that passes all understanding. All we have to do is give over our worries. Each space that is opened is immediately filled with God’s precious peace.

Loving God, We thank you! You are waiting to spend time with us! Nudge us when we are sitting and waiting so that we find you now. Thank you! In the name of Christ, we pray. Amen

Thought for the day: Moments spent with God can make a big difference in my day.

Let Go of your worries and find God’s peace! Pastor Liz
