Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
July 31, 2023
Song of Songs 2:8-13
8 Listen! It’s my lover: here he comes now, leaping upon the mountains, bounding over the hills. 9 My lover is like a gazelle or a young stag. Here he stands now, outside our wall, peering through the windows, peeking through the lattices. 10 My lover spoke and said to me, “Rise up, my dearest, my fairest, and go. 11 Here, the winter is past; the rains have come and gone. 12 Blossoms have appeared in the land; the season of singing has arrived, and the sound of the turtledove is heard in our land. 13 The green fruit is on the fig tree, and the grapevines in bloom are fragrant. Rise up, my dearest, my fairest, and go.
Good Morning, Be still and know God.
I enjoy living where we have distinctive seasons. The changes are refreshing, and each season has its own unique characteristics. It is interesting how impatient I become as a particular season lingers. I’m sitting here this morning thinking of how wonderful the cool, crisp air of Fall would feel right now. Summer is only about a third of the way done, yet I’m already looking toward Fall.
Summer is the season that brings fresh vegetables to my table and beautiful flowers to my garden. Summer is a time for family gatherings. Remember how we long for summer on a dreary Winter day, but when the heat and humidity of summer become intolerable, we begin dreaming of a new season.
I always say that I don’t want to wish my life away, but I easily fall into these dreams of a better, more comfortable day. The same thing happens in the seasons of our lives. Remember when you couldn’t wait to be old enough to drive, move into your own house, or have a job? Now that we’re older, we warn our young ones to enjoy being young while they can.
When I am caught between the now and the dreams of a better tomorrow, I go back to the understanding that God’s ways and thoughts are not ours and makes everything beautiful in his time. Enjoy the fruits that each day presents. Tomorrow will be a new day with new possibilities.
He has made everything beautiful and appropriate in its time. He has also planted eternity [a sense of divine purpose] in the human heart [a mysterious longing which nothing under the sun can satisfy, except God]—yet man cannot find out (comprehend, grasp) what God has done (His overall plan) from the beginning to the end. Ecclesiastes 3:11 Amplified Bible
Loving God, We thank you! We are impatient! We want to see everything now, but You give us glimpses of eternal glory as we are ready. Thank you! In the name of Christ, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: God provides the support I need to grow in faith.
All things are beautiful in God’s time! Pastor Liz
