Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
August 29, 2022
Read Matthew 10:27-31
27 What I say to you in the darkness, tell in the light; and what you hear whispered, announce from the rooftops. 28 Don’t be afraid of those who kill the body but can’t kill the soul. Instead, be afraid of the one who can destroy both body and soul in hell. 29 Aren’t two sparrows sold for a small coin? But not one of them will fall to the ground without your Father knowing about it already. 30 Even the hairs of your head are all counted. 31 Don’t be afraid. You are worth more than many sparrows.
Good morning! For His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He cares for me.
In 1905, Charles Gabriel and Civilla Martin wrote the beautiful gospel hymn, His Eye is On the Sparrow. There are countless recordings of this hymn that reminds us that God is with us always.
As I read the passage this morning, I was particularly struck by vs. 27. What I say to you in the darkness, tell in the light; and what you hear whispered, announce from the rooftops. The gift of God’s grace and mercy are not to be stored away for when we need them. Our choice to be a Christian shouldn’t be something that we keep a secret.
Think of those old Publisher’s Clearing House commercials where the lucky person goes crazy when they find out that they have won. Our decision to accept Christ and receive the gift of eternal life is life changing. Our response to our blessings should be to praise God and to set our lives to follow the example of Christ by humbling ourselves and serving others.
Our God knows us each, even the hairs on our head are counted, and is protecting and caring for us every moment. In Isaiah 49:16 we read, See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me. Finally, in Romans 8:31 we read, if God is with us, then who can be against us?
Arise knowing that God is with you, embrace your life, and shout God’s name from the highest mountain tops for all to hear.
Gracious God, Thank You for loving us. We can’t imagine how You take care of and know each of us by name, but we are grateful that you do. We thank you for everything. Thank You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: God sees even the smallest creature with deep awareness and tenderness of heart.
Praise God! Pastor Liz
