Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room

  September 4, 2024

Genesis 2:15-22

15 The LORD God took the human and settled him in the garden of Eden to farm it and to take care of it. 16 The LORD God commanded the human, “Eat your fill from all of the garden’s trees; 17 but don’t eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, because on the day you eat from it, you will die!” 18 Then the LORD God said, “It’s not good that the human is alone. I will make him a helper that is perfect for him.” 19 So the LORD God formed from the fertile land all the wild animals and all the birds in the sky and brought them to the human to see what he would name them. The human gave each living being its name. 20 The human named all the livestock, all the birds in the sky, and all the wild animals. But a helper perfect for him was nowhere to be found. 21 So the LORD God put the human into a deep and heavy sleep, and took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh over it. 22 With the rib taken from the human, the LORD God fashioned a woman and brought her to the human being.

Good Morning! Bless the Lord, O My Soul!

From the very beginning, God created us to work and live with others because God knew that we needed others to love and support us. Our support group includes other people and all the living things that surround us. It is God's design that we find love and support in our relationships.

I have reached an age when too many of my family, friends, and acquaintances are passing on to God’s glory and eternal life. When I was younger, I wondered why older people spent so much time talking about who had died. I am beginning to appreciate those conversations on a new level. It’s not about their death, but about their life. Those about whom we speak played an essential part in our lives. They were our mentors, teachers, and colleagues.

As those left behind, we mourn the loss of our family and friends, but I know that I would not be the person I am today without these relationships. To honor those who have been a part of me, I try to be that person for someone else by sharing the knowledge and wisdom that I have gleaned from them.

Faithful God, Thank you for creating us. You know our needs before we do. Thank you for placing saints and angels to lead us on our journeys. Thank you! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen

Thought for the day: We can rely on God and others to help us through turbulent times.

Strength comes through relying upon others.  Pastor Liz
