Liz’s Morning Devotional based upon Upper Room
September 7, 2021
Read Matthew 6:19-21
19 “Stop collecting treasures for your own benefit on earth, where moths and rust eat them and where thieves break in and steal them. 20 Instead, collect treasures for yourselves in heaven, where moths and rust don’t eat them and where thieves don’t break in and steal them. 21 Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Good Morning! Our true treasures cannot be taken from us!
As many more students and teachers return to school today, may all be strengthened by your love and mercy.
Most of us have some things that we are drawn to buy and even collect. Some spend much time and money on their collections/treasures. They may even dedicate an entire room or house to these items. Items that once the owner places them in their place of honor, they are rarely touched.
This passage in Matthew reminds us to spend our time and efforts gathering treasures stored in our hearts. I am reminded of the commercial series from a few years ago where the cost of certain items like concert tickets or plane tickets are listed, but then the time with a loved one is listed as priceless. Our relationships with others are priceless and precious. It is so easy in our world today to become distracted by things like cell phones which challenge us to remain present in the moment. We must never lose sight of our precious time with others for we never know which moment will be our last.
Loving God, Thank You for loving us. We struggle with many things during our earthly life because we have created so many distractors that encourage us to lose sight of what is really important. May we work on gathering those precious treasures that will be with us always. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: What eternal treasures have I stored in my heart?
Time with loved ones: precious! Pastor Liz
