Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room

Psalm 19:7-14
7 The LORD’s Instruction is perfect, reviving one’s very being. The LORD’s laws are faithful, making naive people wise. 8 The LORD’s regulations are right, gladdening the heart. The LORD’s commands are pure, giving light to the eyes. 9 Honoring the LORD is correct, lasting forever. The LORD’s judgments are true. All of these are righteous! 10 They are more desirable than gold than tons of pure gold! They are sweeter than honey even dripping off the honeycomb! 11 No doubt about it: your servant is enlightened by them; there is great reward in keeping them. 12 But can anyone know what they’ve accidentally done wrong? Clear me of any unknown sin 13 and save your servant from willful sins. Don’t let them rule me. Then I’ll be completely blameless; I’ll be innocent of great wrongdoing. 14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be pleasing to you, LORD, my rock and my redeemer.
Good Morning. Praise God from whom all blessings flow!
In this Psalm, David first lifts up the importance of the word of God as found in Scripture, and then in verse 12, he admits his sinfulness and the sins of all and asks God for protection from his own imperfections. He closes with beautiful words that are often spoken before delivering a sermon. 14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be pleasing to you, LORD, my rock and my redeemer.
I appreciate David’s admission of sins that he has committed unknowingly. I think that we encounter many people in the span of a day or week and that we, because of our own preoccupation, might cause someone harm or slight them without purposely choosing to do so. David asks that God lead him to a righteous life.
How do we find our way toward the righteous life that David seeks? Jesus came to teach us how to talk to God through prayer and to find God’s truths through reading and studying the Bible. No matter what else is going on in our lives, we need to carve out time with God each day. It is easy to say, “I’ll read the Bible when my life is less busy, but what if that day never comes.” I find that on my most hectic days, I especially need that moment to center myself by spending time with God. If this is new to you, set an alarm and spend just a moment in prayer or meditation. Gradually increase your time, and “God time” will become a blessed part of your daily routine.
Loving God, We love you! When we are too busy to spend time with You, give us a nudge to remind us to put You first in our lives. In the name of Christ, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: Put God first in your daily routine.
Start your day with a blessing: Spend time with God! Pastor Liz
