Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
September 20, 2025
Matthew 5:14-16
14 You are the light of the world. A city on top of a hill can’t be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a basket. Instead, they put it on top of a lampstand, and it shines on all who are in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before people, so they can see the good things you do and praise your Father who is in heaven.
Good Morning! Let your light shine!
Why would we want to hide God’s light that is within us? Perhaps we fear that someone will stop us and ask why we shine when everything else around us is dark and dirty. This is a valid fear. What would we say if someone asked?
Would we have the confidence to proclaim our faith? Again, this is a fear that many people have. We often feel like we can’t answer because we aren’t the preacher or some theologian who studies the Bible in depth every day. I promise you that we all have something to share when asked why our light shines so brightly.
The words are simple: I shine because God blesses me! Then you share one thing that God has done for you. That’s all you have to do! Most of us are quick to share the good news a new baby, job, car . . ., but feel “slow” of tongue [like Moses] when asked to share our faith.
We receive remarkable gifts from God every day. As you sit and wait in traffic or in an office, take a moment to construct one sentence explaining why God is important in your life. This will prepare you to answer anyone who asks, “Why does your light shine so brightly!”
Loving Lord, you bless us abundantly! Thank you for our light! Help us let it shine! Thank you. We love you, Lord! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: God will show me someone who needs my light today.
This little light of mine! I’m gonna let it shine! Pastor Liz
