Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
September 25, 2025
1 Corinthians 10:10-13
10 Let’s not grumble, like some of them did, and were killed by the destroyer. 11 These things happened to them as an example and were written as a warning for us to whom the end of time has come. 12 So those who think they are standing need to watch out or else they may fall. 13 No temptation has seized you that isn’t common for people. But God is faithful. He won’t allow you to be tempted beyond your abilities. Instead, with the temptation, God will also supply a way out so that you will be able to endure it.
Good Morning! Enjoy the moment!
Laughter is medicine for the soul. Lowell, my sweet departed husband, always said that his job was to make me laugh. He always knew when I needed to let go of something and just laugh. In Proverbs 17:22, we read: "A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones."
I recall a family member who believed it was unladylike to laugh out loud. When she saw something funny, she might smile, but she would hold the laugh in so that she didn’t disrupt her attempt at proper decorum. We should never take ourselves so seriously that it is improper to laugh.
I recently had an experience where things didn't go as I expected, and I was working hard to get things back on track. After two days of angst, I got up and was reading my morning scripture, and it occurred to me that I hadn't laughed in two days. I was blown away by this revelation.
In that moment, I turned over my anxiety and worries to God and laughed at myself for allowing such things to affect me so adversely. When I joined the group that morning, I intentionally looked for the good and almost immediately found things to make me laugh again. I felt better as the weight of my worries melted away. When you find yourself grumbling, take action to adjust your direction. It’s a blessing to find joy in all things.
Loving Lord, you bless us abundantly! We often take ourselves too seriously. Help us to find the joy that you offer. Thank you. We love you, Lord! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: God’s gift of laughter lightens my load.
Let go of your worries and laugh! Pastor Liz
