Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room

  October 3, 2024

Psalm 94:16-19

16 Who will stand up for me against the wicked? Who will help me against evildoers? 17 If the LORD hadn’t helped me, I would live instantly in total silence. 18 Whenever I feel my foot slipping, your faithful love steadies me, LORD. 19 When my anxieties multiply, your comforting calms me down.

Good Morning! Praise God!

Falling is an interesting thing. At some point, I remember learning that objects fall, not fly through space. For example, the International Space Station is falling through space. Without routine course corrections and the use of thrusters to generate speed, it would fall into the earth’s atmosphere and burn up.

As a youngster, falling is a regular occurrence. When we learn to walk, we often fall. Sometimes, for kids, it’s fun to fall down for no particular reason. Old-school comedians created an art of falling down for laughs.

Most of us have experienced slipping. For a moment, you feel like you’re going to fall, but then “catch” yourself. What about when you suddenly feel yourself jerk as if to catch yourself when you’re sleeping? As we age, falling becomes a fear. It is equated with injuries and broken bones, and we worry about how we will get up if we fall.

These are examples of physical falls, but what about our spiritual falls? i.e., falling from grace. God promises to be with us and to keep us upright and steady through our challenges. Just like having someone physically catch you when you feel like you're falling, God is there to grab your hand and steady your feet when you feel the ground shifting below you.

When we call on God for help, God provides a safety net to soften our fall and resources to pull us back up. God’s love and mercy conquers all challenges, even death. Praise be to God.

Dear Lord, We are your children! In the course of our lives, we are knocked down by our challenges. Thank you for being by our side to steady and pick us up when we can’t get up alone. Thank you! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen

Thought for the day: Trust God to help you through challenges.

Trust that God will catch us when we fall! Pastor Liz
