Liz’s Morning Devotional based upon Upper Room

Read Psalm 34:17-20
17 When the righteous cry out, the LORD listens; he delivers them from all their troubles. 18 The LORD is close to the brokenhearted; he saves those whose spirits are crushed. 19 The righteous have many problems, but the LORD delivers them from every one. 20 He protects all their bones; not even one will be broken.
Good Morning! God is closer than the very breath we breathe.
We all long for the peace that God promises to all who call. This theme is repeated many times in both the Old and New Testaments. In John 14, we read in verse 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
What is this peace that we are promised? In our hectic world, sometimes we envision peace as stepping away from the chaos, going for a walk to clear our heads, or even the removal of conflict from the world. In all of these examples we want to get rid of something.
In contrast to our worldly definition of peace, the peace that Jesus gives us is not the removal of anything. Instead it is the filling of ourselves with the calming reassurance of God’s presence throught the Holy Spirit within us. Think of those times when you truly felt God by your side. I am most at peace when I am communing with God during my special morning time, as I listen during my weekly service preparation, and when I am sharing the Good News with others. In my most spirit-filled moments, I feel the joy oozing from me.
Each of us is called in our own special way! Maybe you feel closest to God when you are baking, sewing, or gardening. Open yourself to fully embrace the peace within you as you serve your Lord and Savior. God’s peace isn’t reserved for certain people. Jesus is our direct conduit to God. Don’t be afraid to allow yourself to experience the peace that passes all understanding. God is with you and waiting to share the peace.
Loving God, Thank You for loving us. We can’t imagine how you can be everywhere, all the time, but we are so thankful that you are with us. May we take time to allow the Holy Spirit to fill us with your peace. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: God’s peace is available in ordinary moments.
