Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
October 10, 2022
Read James 1:22-25
22 You must be doers of the word and not only hearers who mislead themselves. 23 Those who hear but don’t do the word are like those who look at their faces in a mirror. 24 They look at themselves, walk away, and immediately forget what they were like. 25 But there are those who study the perfect law, the law of freedom, and continue to do it. They don’t listen and then forget, but they put it into practice in their lives. They will be blessed in whatever they do.
Good morning! Love one another, my friends!
What do you do when you receive good news? Do you go into a room, close the door, and sit quietly? I would presume that most of us do not. I think of when we find out a new baby has just been born. It is not just the new parents and grandparents who can’t wait to share pictures of this bundle of joy. Extended family members are eager to show off the pictures to anyone who is around to see them, even complete strangers.
In our new media-infused world, we share our good news not just with those physically around us, but with all of our friends and family through social media like Facebook. What would Facebook be without all of the pictures? We, as humans, love to look at and share pictures, and we love to share in the happiness of others.
So we’ve established that good news is a thing to be shared freely with anyone in earshot physically or in our cyber world. Then why do we have such a hard time sharing the Good News: All who accept Christ as Lord and Savior shall not perish, but have everlasting life. How many times have we said that I don’t feel comfortable sharing my testimony or witnessing to others? Do we worry that they will laugh at us, yell at us, or worse?
We are willing to show a baby picture or tell of unexpected good news to anyone, yet we are afraid to share Christ. Paul tells us that we should not be ashamed of our faith and we should boldly share Christ with the world. James is telling us that we can’t just hear/receive the Word, but that we must act upon it.
We have been given the blessing of eternal life and we are called to share our blessings with everyone to the ends of the earth. Until all our fed, we have not finished our calling. Moses was afraid because he was not a good speaker. When we are afraid that we don’t know the words to speak, we must open ourselves and focus on hearing God as he speaks to us. God will give us everything we need to share the Gospel with all.
Gracious God, Thank You for loving us. Oh, God, you push us in ways that make us uncomfortable. Be patient with us. We will try again today. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: Focusing on God’s voice brings order to my life.
God provides for us! Pastor Liz
