Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
October 14, 2025
Matthew 8:23-27
23 When Jesus got into a boat, his disciples followed him. 24 A huge storm arose on the lake so that waves were sloshing over the boat. But Jesus was asleep. 25 They came and woke him, saying, “Lord, rescue us! We’re going to drown!” 26 He said to them, “Why are you afraid, you people of weak faith?” Then he got up and gave orders to the winds and the lake, and there was a great calm. 27 The people were amazed and said, “What kind of person is this? Even the winds and the lake obey him!”
Good Morning! Rejoice! Again, I say Rejoice!
Think about a time when you were hosting a family gathering. You spent weeks planning and organizing your menu, seating arrangements, and the general logistics. As the big day approached, you completed all of your prep work as planned. The shopping was done. The housework was done. Tables set and decorated. Yet, still you worried!
The morning of the event, you began your day’s preparation schedule. Everything went as planned. Baking was done. The Main Course was done. You even had time to shower and get changed into your “party” clothes. As you had time to rerun your last-minute list, and every box was checked. Yet, still you worried.
Jesus promises to be with us always. No matter what struggles arise, we will not be alone. Spending time worrying about the what-ifs or maybes in our lives wastes energy that could be better used elsewhere. The disciples were in the boat with Jesus, their Lord and Savior, yet still they worried.
Certainly, there are times when we get nervous about things, and a little nervous energy can be beneficial because it often provides us with a moment of clarity as our adrenaline engages our senses. When worry becomes debilitating, it is time to turn it over to Jesus. Jesus is waiting for us to say, “Here you go, Jesus! I’ve played with this long enough!”
It’s time! Give your worries to Jesus!
Loving Lord, you bless us abundantly! We become consumed with worry. We even worry about worrying. Help us let you relieve us of these worries. Thank you. We love you, Lord! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: Because God is with us, we don’t have to be afraid.
Let go of your worry! You’ve carried it long enough. Pastor Liz
