Liz’s Morning Devotional based upon Upper Room
October 29, 2021
Read Romans 12:4-8
4 We have many parts in one body, but the parts don’t all have the same function. 5 In the same way, though there are many of us, we are one body in Christ, and individually we belong to each other. 6 We have different gifts that are consistent with God’s grace that has been given to us. If your gift is prophecy, you should prophesy in proportion to your faith. 7 If your gift is service, devote yourself to serving. If your gift is teaching, devote yourself to teaching. 8 If your gift is encouragement, devote yourself to encouraging. The one giving should do it with no strings attached. The leader should lead with passion. The one showing mercy should be cheerful.
Good Morning! Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow!
The rain settled in overnight, not a violent storm, but so far a calm, gentle rain. As Neon and I went out for our morning time, I noticed how clean the air seemed. Rain can signal a time of refreshing and refueling. As the plants are physically nourished, we, too, receive spiritual nourishment. Even though the clouds were masking the stars, I felt safe and secure in the arms of God.
This passage in Romans reminds us to take stock and appreciate the gifts that we have been given. We are called to joyfully share these gifts with the world. Have you ever wished that you could do the things that someone else seems to do with ease? When I was growing up, it seemed easy to wish that you had the same gifts as the star athletes or the beauty of the cheerleaders. Sometimes we get caught up in wishing for what we don’t have, and we fail to even consider what we do have.
I remember a very quiet student who was in high school with me. She never said much, she never raised her hand, and she would stand and listen as others in the group laughed and giggled as they talked. One day the theater director was holding auditions for the spring musical and this girl came to audition. This was very interesting to me because I hadn’t considered her as possessing the skills of an actress or singer.
When she began to sing, we were all in awe. The joy on her face, the clearness of her tones, and the essence of her being were amazing. On that day, I discovered a hidden gem hidden behind the quiet demeanor of this young girl. What a blessing to all that she chose to share her gift!
Do you have gifts that you have not shared with others yet? Be brave and let the Holy Spirit guide you as you prepare to serve God. Give of yourself and you will be blessed!
Loving God, Thank You for loving us. May we work to discover our own gifts, and not be envious of the gifts of others. Each of us has an important role within the body of Christ. May we joyfully share our gifts so that others can see Jesus. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: Today I will celebrate how God made me and use my skills for God’s glory.
Be Brave! Let Your Light Shine! Pastor Liz
