Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room

November 2, 2022

Read Genesis 12:1-4

1 The LORD said to Abram, “Leave your land, your family, and your father’s household for the land that I will show you. 2 I will make of you a great nation and will bless you. I will make your name respected, and you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, those who curse you I will curse; all the families of the earth will be blessed because of you.” 4 Abram left just as the LORD told him, and Lot went with him. Now Abram was 75 years old when he left Haran.

Good Morning, Be still and know that I am God!

Age is such an interesting concept. I remember a teacher friend many years ago talking about the problem of teaching ancient civilizations to second graders. She said, “How do I help them understand “ancient” when they think I’m “ancient”? We chuckle at this, but we do have some significant challenges with the parameters of age.

When we are young, twenty seems old, but the older we get even sixty doesn’t seem so old. Advertisers started this idea of 40 being the new 30, and you can apply this to whichever decade you represent. We also recognize that we all age differently, and it is not always appropriate to place arbitrary age restrictions. If we looked at three people who were seventy years old, we would find great variances in how they lived. Some have become sedentary, some have slowed down a step, but others are running marathons or launching new businesses.

Despite all of this, many dread growing “old”. When Abram left Haran, he was 75 years old, and his greatest calling was just being revealed to him. He was called to father a great nation. It would have been easy for Abram to say, “God, you have called me too late, it is my time to rest!”, but Abram packed and moved to where God was calling him.

Be still and listen to God’s call to you. It might seem as if the parade has passed you by, but God still has ways for you to serve others. Like Abram, we must listen and follow God as we are called to make disciples of the world.

Gracious God, Thank You for loving us. It is easy for us to step aside and wait for others to fill in the void, but You are still using us to share the Word. Help us serve you with joy in our hearts. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen

Thought for the day: How is God calling me to serve in this season?
