Liz’s Morning Devotional based upon Upper Room
November 4, 2021
Read Psalm 119:105-112
105 Your word is a lamp before my feet and a light for my journey. 106 I have sworn, and I fully mean it: I will keep your righteous rules. 107 I have been suffering so much LORD, make me live again according to your promise. 108 Please, LORD, accept my spontaneous gifts of praise. Teach me your rules! 109 Though my life is constantly in danger, I won’t forget your Instruction. 110 Though the wicked have set a trap for me, I won’t stray from your precepts. 111 Your laws are my possession forever because they are my heart’s joy. 112 I have decided to keep your statutes forever, every last one.
Good Morning! Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet!
My dad was a cartographer, map maker, and then later a geography/history teacher. As a family, we traveled quite a bit to visit family, but one of my fondest memories was our Sunday afternoon drives. From a very young age, my brother and I were taught to read maps, and we were given the job of being the navigator on our trips. This meant that we had to follow the map and give the directions as turns approached.
Sometimes we were travelling familiar routes, but other times we were totally reliant upon the maps and following the route which we had studied before venturing out on our trip. Of course, we ran into detours and traffic jams that might cause us to alter our path, but we could quickly replot our trip to return to our designated path. These experiences shaped my ability to follow landmarks and signs along my journeys.
As a Christian, studying scripture is like reading maps. We read, study, and plot our course to reach eternal life. Along the way, there are obstacles and troubles that cause us to alter our paths, but if we have a firm foundation based in scripture, we can return to the word and replot our turns and find our chosen path. Sometimes, we feel lost because we encounter an unexpected divergence from the path. When we are lost, return to the map, the Word, and reach out to Christ who is always with us to support and lead us along the way.
Loving God, Thank You for loving us. Thank you for helping us find our way when we are lost. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: God’s guidance is always trustworthy.
