Liz’s Morning Devotional based upon Upper Room
January 12, 2022
Read Isaiah 62:1-5
1 For Zion’s sake I won’t keep silent, and for Jerusalem’s sake I won’t sit still until her righteousness shines out like a light, and her salvation blazes like a torch. 2 Nations will see your righteousness, all kings your glory. You will be called by a new name, which the LORD’s own mouth will determine. 3 You will be a splendid garland in the LORD’s hand, a royal turban in the palm of God’s hand. 4 You will no longer be called Abandoned, and your land will no longer be called Deserted. Instead, you will be called My Delight Is in Her, and your land, Married. Because the LORD delights in you, your land will be cared for once again. 5 As a young man marries a young woman, so your sons will marry you. With the joy of a bridegroom because of his bride, so your God will rejoice because of you.
Good Morning! We have a new name written down in glory!
If someone was asked to describe you in one word, what would that word be? As you think about that, also consider if this word would change if you looked at different points in your life. As I reflect on this idea, many thoughts and words come to mind. I remember those silly games we played at recess where “names” were tossed about freely: four-eyes, teacher’s pet, slowpoke. It’s funny how the negative ones popped up so quickly. Sometimes we hurt someone’s feelings, and sometimes our feelings were hurt.
Isaiah 62:2 says that our Lord will give us a new name. God takes the oppressed, the downtrodden, and lifts them up. Without God, our true identity is often hidden below the surface awaiting a time to be revealed. God sees past our shortcomings and into the child of possibility which awaits. Are you ready to cast off your shell and adopt the name by which God calls you?
Who do others say that you are? We must allow ourselves to be transformed by the Holy Spirit working within us so that all can see the true identity that God lovingly created.
Creator God, Thank You for loving us. Deep within each of us is a beautiful being. Sometimes we are too interested in how someone looks on the outside to notice the beauty that lies beneath the surface. May we accept all that we meet into the community of faith, so that each may blossom into their true self. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: My identity as God’s child is stronger than any label others can give me.
Are you ready to see the miracle? Pastor Liz
