Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
November 24, 2023
Hebrews 2:1-4
1 This is why it’s necessary for us to pay more attention to what we have heard, or else we may drift away from it. 2 If the message that was spoken by angels was reliable, and every offense and act of disobedience received an appropriate consequence, 3 how will we escape if we ignore such a great salvation? It was first announced through the Lord, and then it was confirmed by those who heard him. 4 God also vouched for their message with signs, amazing things, various miracles, and gifts from the Holy Spirit, which were handed out the way he wanted.
Good Morning. Our God is an awesome God!
Pay attention! Throughout the Old and New Testaments, God calls us to pay attention and to remain steadfast to the Word. We are warned that evil is always at work trying to distract us from our way. Despite the warnings, we quickly fall back into our old lives when we forget to focus on God.
God knows that we are weak, so he places many signs and gifts along our path to remind us to look to the light. We must be diligent in our pursuit of our faith journey. We will encounter false prophets along the way. Only those who have developed a maturity of their faith will see through those who tempt us to drift away from God. These verses are meant to impress upon us the need to persevere. In that way, there are divine means for our perseverance in the Christian life.
When we slowly invite or consider temptations, whatever they may be, to minister to us, or we begin to water down and ignore the riches of the gospel of Jesus Christ proclaimed to us in the word of God, these warnings boldly remind us precisely what is at stake so that we would adjust course and correct our drift.
Pay Attention! Keep focused on God!
Creator God, Thank you for this beautiful gift of life. Sometimes, we are easily pulled from our faith journey. Thank you for providing us with the map so that we can find our way back to you. Thank you in the name of Jesus. Amen
Thought for the day: God’s word is a guide that keeps me on course.
Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet! Pastor Liz
