Liz’s Morning Devotional based upon Upper Room

Read John 1:1-9
1 In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God. 2 The Word was with God in the beginning. 3 Everything came into being through the Word, and without the Word nothing came into being. What came into being 4 through the Word was life, In the Word was life and the life was the light for all people. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness doesn’t extinguish the light. 6 A man named John was sent from God. 7 He came as a witness to testify concerning the light so that through him everyone would believe in the light. 8 He himself wasn’t the light, but his mission was to testify concerning the light. 9 The true light that shines on all people was coming into the world.
Good Morning! Jesus is the light of the world!
Light=feeling safe
Darkness=fear
This seems to be a fairly universal concept. When I am traveling and spend the night away from home, I like the comfort that some source of light brings when I wake up at night. In my own home, I have many sources of ambient light: non-obtrusive lights that emit just small amounts of light.
During the Christmas season, I love the effect of lights in my festive decorations. Each tiny bulb seems to say, Jesus is coming! Are you ready? As a child, my favorite part of Christmas lights was getting up early in the morning when it was still dark and turning on the Christmas lights. As I stared into the beauty that the lights created, my heart was warmed as peace and joy began to fill me.
The voice of one crying in the wilderness. John the Baptist was called to prepare the way for the Messiah who was coming. John the Apostle describes darkness as being devoid of God. Whereas, light is knowing and accepting God. Jesus, the light of the world, is our conduit to God as he lights our way on our journey. When we step or fall into the shadows, we are moving away from God, but Jesus is always there to light our way when we call on His Holy Name.
As Christians, we are called to be that light so that others may find Christ through us. Imagine a world in which darkness has been removed and all know God. During this season of Advent look to the light and prepare the path to Jesus, so that others may join you on this journey.
Creator God, Thank You for loving us. Thank you for sending John to help us Pay Attention. It is so easy for us to lose focus and wander into the darkness. Thank you for sending Your Son to light our way. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: Christmas is the celebration of Jesus, the Light of the World.
Let your light shine! Pastor Liz
