Liz’s Morning Devotional based upon Upper Room

December 10, 2021

Read Psalm 23:1-6

1 The LORD is my shepherd. I lack nothing. 2 He lets me rest in grassy meadows; he leads me to restful waters; 3 he keeps me alive. He guides me in proper paths for the sake of his good name. 4 Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no danger because you are with me. Your rod and your staff protect me. 5 You set a table for me right in front of my enemies. You bathe my head in oil; my cup is so full it spills over! 6 Yes, goodness and faithful love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the LORD’s house as long as I live.

Good Morning! Fear no evil, for God is with you!

What an interesting weather pattern we are currently experiencing: the major temperature swings and changing wind patterns resemble riding a roller coaster. Through the years I have developed an affinity for roller coasters. As a family, we love to visit theme parks to take in the sights and sounds, eat interesting foods, and especially ride the roller coasters. Each year, the developers of these parks work to integrate the newest technology to make their rides the best.

Each time you ride a particular coaster is different. When you ride a roller coaster the first time, it is all about anticipating the unknown. With subsequent rides, you get different experiences that are dependant on the location of your seat. i.e. front, middle, back. However, once the barrier of the unknown is broken after that first ride, you tend to focus on a particular aspect of the ride, such as twists or climbs, or speed. Regardless, even when you know what to expect, each time you ride is unique and full of surprises.

Our walks of faith are similar to riding a roller coaster, or the changing weather patterns of the month. Sometimes our walk is calm and predictable, but sometimes we are called to take an unknown path or make an unexpected turn. Our first experience of intentionally following Jesus on an unknown journey can be scary or full of anxiety as we focus on our anticipation of what challenges we may face. We quickly learn that Jesus is with us and will guide us through the obstacles we may encounter.

When we break the barrier that our fears and anxieties have constructed, we are free to follow Jesus wherever we are led and focus on serving the needs of those we encounter. Even when we walk into the darkness, I fear no danger for you are with me. As we journey with Jesus, we will grow in our confidence and reach out in ways we could never have imagined. When we shift our focus to Jesus and allow the Holy Spirit to transform us, there are infinite blessings.

Creator God, Thank You for loving us. Thank you for guiding us when we feel as if we are on an emotional or spiritual roller coaster. May we lean on the Good Shepherd to lead us on our journey. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen

Thought for the day: Today I will focus my thoughts on Jesus.

Embrace your journey! Pastor Liz
