Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room

December 28, 2025

Matthew 13:1-9

1 That day Jesus went out of the house and sat down beside the lake. 2 Such large crowds gathered around him that he climbed into a boat and sat down. The whole crowd was standing on the shore. 3 He said many things to them in parables: “A farmer went out to scatter seed. 4 As he was scattering seed, some fell on the path, and birds came and ate it. 5 Other seed fell on rocky ground where the soil was shallow. They sprouted immediately because the soil wasn’t deep. 6 But when the sun came up, it scorched the plants, and they dried up because they had no roots. 7 Other seed fell among thorny plants. The thorny plants grew and choked them. 8 Other seed fell on good soil and bore fruit, in one case a yield of one hundred to one, in another case a yield of sixty to one, and in another case a yield of thirty to one. 9 Everyone who has ears should pay attention.”

Good Morning! Pay attention!

We are called to be seed scatterers. It’s not our job to decide how many or where we should scatter the seeds. We shouldn’t look at a field and say, “I won’t waste my seeds there because this land is obviously barren.”

In Isaiah 35, we read, Thirsty deserts will be glad; barren lands will celebrate and blossom with flowers. Deserts will bloom everywhere and sing joyful songs.

In Ezekiel 36:35, Everyone will talk about how this land, which was once a wilderness, has become like the Garden of Eden, and how the cities which were torn down, looted, and left in ruins are now inhabited and fortified.

We are to continue scattering seeds to the end of the earth. God will make the impossible possible. We are the presenters of the Good News, while God saves souls.

Imagine blowing dandelion seeds in all directions: some will float far from their origin, some will drop to the ground, and some will be eaten by birds and later deposited. Now, imagine persevering with the tenacity of that dandelion seed. I see fields, rocky cliffs, and even cracks in asphalt, filled with yellow “flowers.”

Redeeming Lord, you bless us abundantly! Thank you for sending your son to teach us new ways. Help us freely share your love. Thank you. We love you. In Christ’s name we pray, Amen.

Thought for the day: Scatter God’s seeds with exuberance!

Keep scattering seeds! Pastor Liz
